Gordon L. McDonough

Gordon Leo McDonough (born January 2, 1895 in Buffalo , New York , †  June 25, 1968 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1963 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1898, Gordon McDonough moved with his parents to Emporium in Pennsylvania , where he attended public schools including high school. Between 1915 and 1918 he worked there in the chemical industry. He then moved to Los Angeles , where he was again active in this industry until 1933. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1933 to 1944 he was a member of the county council in Los Angeles County , whose presidency he took over for a year.

In the 1944 congressional election , McDonough was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of California , where he succeeded John M. Costello on January 3, 1945 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1963 . During this time, the end of the Second World War , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement took place . In 1962 he was not re-elected.

Gordon McDonough died in Bethesda on June 25, 1968 and was buried in Los Angeles. He was married to Catherine McNeil, with whom he had seven children.
