Marion Cannon

Marion Cannon (born October 30, 1834 in Morgantown , Virginia , †  August 27, 1920 in Ventura , California ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia , Marion Cannon attended public schools in his homeland and then completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. In 1852 he moved to California, where he worked in the mining industry in Nevada County for 21 years. Between 1869 and 1871 he was employed in this district as a recorder . In 1874 he settled near Ventura, where he worked in agriculture. He later became a member of the Farmers' Alliance , a forerunner of the Populist Party . In 1890 and 1891 he was elected President of this alliance for California. In 1892 he represented this organization, which in the meantime also referred to itself as the People's Party , at their federal party congress. In the same year he represented the State of California at an industry conference in St. Louis .

In the 1892 congressional election , Cannon was elected as a candidate for the Populist Party in the sixth constituency of California to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William W. Bowers , who was in the seventh district, on March 4, 1893 changed. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1984, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1895 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Cannon worked again in agriculture. Politically, he no longer appeared. He died on August 27, 1920 near Ventura, where he was also buried.
