Alfred "Al" McCandless (born July 23, 1927 in Brawley , California - † August 9, 2017 in La Quinta , California) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 1995 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Al McCandless attended Los Angeles public schools . Between 1945 and 1946 in the final stages of World War II and again from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War , he served as an officer in the Marine Corps . In the meantime he studied at the University of California in Los Angeles. Between 1953 and 1975 McCandless was a car and truck dealer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1972 to 1982 he was a member of the Riverside County county council . At that time he was also active in building management in this district.

In the 1982 congressional election , McCandless was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 37th constituency of California , where he succeeded Jerry Lewis on January 3, 1983 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . Since 1993 he represented there as the successor of Randy Cunningham the 44th district of his state. In 1994, Al McCandless waived another congressional candidacy. After that, he no longer appeared politically.
