Juniperus durangensis is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to Mexico.

description

Juniperus durangensis grows as an evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 5 meters. The trunk branches out just above the ground. The branches go straight or ascending from the branches and form an irregular crown . The bark is ash brown in color and flakes off in long, fibrous strips. The smooth, red-brown bark of the branches may occasionally peel off in scales.

The scale-shaped, dark gray-green leaves are 1 to 2 millimeters long and are usually opposite on the branches. The leaf margins are finely serrated.

The humped, berry-like cones are 6 to 7 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters thick. They have a soft pulp. Each cone bears one to four, with a length of 3 to 4 millimeters and a width of 2 to 3 millimeters, approximately conical to egg-shaped seeds. These are dark red-brown in color, have a pointed or blunt tip and shallow grooves.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus durangensis is in Mexico. It includes the states of Aguascalientes , Chihuahua , Durango , Jalisco , Sonora and Zacatecas .

Juniperus durangensis thrives at altitudes of 1600 to 2900 meters. The species is found mainly in mountain forests, where it forms mixed stands with bearberries ( Arctostaphylos ), other types of juniper ( Juniperus ), oaks ( Quercus ) and pines ( Pinus ). However, it is not common anywhere.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus durangensis by Maximino Martínez in 1946 in Anales del Institutó de Biología de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México, Série Biologia , Volume 17, Number 1, Page 94.

Hazard and protection

Juniperus durangensis is listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary. It is so far only known at ten locations, although there is a possibility that it has been overlooked at other locations.
