Alphonzo "Al" Bell Jr. (born September 19, 1914 in Los Angeles , California - †  April 25, 2004 in Santa Monica , California) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1977 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alphonzo Bell came from a wealthy California family who had made their fortune ranching and the oil business. His father Alphonzo Bell (1875–1947) was not only successful as an entrepreneur, but also as an athlete: at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , he won silver in tennis doubles and bronze in singles. The younger Bell attended Occidental College in Los Angeles until 1938 . During the Second World War , he served in the US Army between 1942 and 1945 . In the following years he worked as a rancher and in the real estate industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1956 to 1959 he was its chairman in California. At the same time he was also a member of the Republican National Committee .

In the 1960 congressional election , Bell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of California , where he succeeded Donald L. Jackson on January 3, 1961 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1977 . Since 1963 he represented the 28th and from 1975 the 27th district of his state. Bell was at times a member of the Science and Space Committee and the Education and Labor Committee. He supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and all other laws in that direction. During his time as a congressman, the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair as well as the final phase of the civil rights movement fell .

In 1976 Bell decided not to run again. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . He died in Santa Monica on April 25, 2004.
