Charles Jeremy "Jerry" Lewis (* 21st October 1934 in Seattle (or according to other sources in Spokane ), Washington ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and was from 1979 to 2013 member of the US House of Representatives for California .

biography

After attending San Bernardino High School , he completed a degree in administration from 1952 to 1956 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Government). He then worked for the Coro Foundation for a year before working as an insurance broker. Between 1964 and 1968 he was a member of the school board ( School Board ) of San Bernardino and in the meantime in 1966 also member of the campaign staff of Jerry Pettis , who was then elected Congressman for California.

He began his own political career when he was elected a member of the California State Assembly , to which he was a member from 1969 to 1978.

In 1978 he was finally elected as a Republican candidate and as the successor to Petti's wife, Shirley Neil Pettis , as a member of the US House of Representatives and represented there after fourteen re-elections in a row from January 3, 1979, initially the 37th, 1983 to 1993 35th, from 1993 to 2003 the 40th and finally from January 3, 2003 to the 41st Congressional District of California. He decided not to run again in 2012 and resigned from Congress on January 3, 2013.

During his parliamentary membership he was within his party, he was from 1989 to 1993 chairman of the House Republican Conference . After he was chairman of the influential US House Committee on Appropriations from 2005 to 2007 , he has since been the highest-ranking member of the Republican minority group ( Ranking Minority Member ) on this committee. In 2006 the public prosecutor's office investigated him on suspicion of corruption.
