Jerry M. Patterson (1975)

Jerry Mumford Patterson (born October 25, 1934 in El Paso , Texas ) is an American politician . From 1975 to 1985 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jerry Patterson attended Tucson High School in Arizona until 1952 . From 1953 to 1957 he served in the U.S. Coast Guard . He then studied at California State University in Long Beach until 1960 . From 1960 to 1963 he was enrolled at the University of Southern California . After completing a law degree at the University of California in Los Angeles and his admission to the bar in 1967, he began working in this profession in Santa Ana . Between 1973 and 1975 he was the legal representative of the Placentia municipality . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1969 to 1973 he was a councilor in Santa Ana; from 1973 to 1975 he also served as mayor there. In 1976, 1980 and 1984 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the 1974 congressional election , Patterson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 38th  constituency of California , where he succeeded George Brown on January 3, 1975 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1985 . Between 1979 and 1981 he chaired the Committee on Reform of the Congressional Committees. He also temporarily chaired a number of sub-committees. In 1984 Patterson was not re-elected.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He also lectured as a visiting professor at California State University in Long Beach between 1986 and 1999. In 1987 he became a city attorney in Cypress . He then served as President of the Coast Community College District Board . Jerry Patterson is married to local politician Linda Moulton-Patterson. The couple have four adult children and six grandchildren. The family lives in Fountain Valley .
