geography

The urban area has a size of 17.1 km².

history

In 1837 the Mexican governor responsible for the area of what is now southern California transferred a huge strip of land, which includes the present-day cities of Anaheim, Fullerton, La Habra, Placentia and Yorba Linda, to Juan Ontiveros, the El Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana .

In 1865, Daniel Kramer, the first English-speaking pioneer, came to the area and acquired 16 km² of land. In 1868, William and Sarah Ann McFadden followed, who bought 400,000 m² and named their new home "Placentia", which is derived from Latin and should mean "a pleasant place to live".

In 1910, AS Bradford, who also laid out the city's road network, convinced the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to lay their route to Los Angeles through Placentia. The train station and the growing agricultural industry (citrus fruits, walnuts, avocados and grapes) soon made the young city more important.

Nevertheless, only 500 people lived in Placentia in 1926 and by 1960 the population had grown to just 5,000. In the course of the incorporation in Orange County in the following ten years, the population of the parish rose to over 25,000. In the meantime the mark of 50,000 residents has been exceeded.

In the 1990s, downtown Placentia was run down compared to its neighboring communities; From the official side, the railway line, which brought the city the prosperity, was blamed for the decline. Inspired by the Alameda Corridor project in the south of Los Angeles, the OnTrac project was launched, which aims to sink the railway lines into a concrete trench several meters deep. The aim was to reduce the noise level and increase safety by avoiding track crossings. The financial management mismanagement led the city into crisis. When the federal government failed to make promises, the city was almost threatened with bankruptcy, which could only be avoided by drastically curtailing public services. The controversy over OnTrac continued until 2004, and it is not certain that the project will ever be completed.
