Kelly Claes (born September 18, 1995 in Placentia ) is an American beach volleyball player .

Career

Claes initially played indoor volleyball during her time at El Dorado High School in Fullerton and at California State University, Long Beach . Then she met Sara Hughes at the University of Southern California know and formed a beach volleyball duo with her.

In 2013 Hughes / Claes won the bronze medal at the U19 World Cup in Porto by beating the German Schneider / Schreiber . They also came third at the U21 World Cup in Larnaka in 2014. They also reached the final at the NORCECA tournament in Puerto Rico. In 2015 Hughes / Claes took third and ninth place at the AVP tournaments in New York City and Manhattan Beach and also third place at the NORCECA tournament in North Bay . At the Grand Slam in Long Beach they took part in a tournament of the FIVB World Tour for the first time. Then they won the NORCECA tournament in Varadero .

At the 2016 AVP tournaments in New York and San Francisco , Hughes / Claes had to admit defeat to Ross / Walsh and finished third and second. They then won the NORCECA tournament in North Bay and the World University Games in Estonia . After a 17th place in the major tournament of the World Tour 2016 in Klagenfurt , they achieved another tournament victory in Puerto Rico. They finished the year in ninth place at the Grand Slam in Long Beach. At the beginning of 2017, Claes played at the five-star World Tour tournament in Fort Lauderdale for once with Kelly Reeves , as participation with her regular partner would not have been possible. After that, Hughes / Claes were reunited and reached two fifth places in the FIVB series in Rio de Janeiro and Poreč . They finished seventh and ninth at the AVP tournaments in New York and Seattle . They also came ninth in the five-star World Tour tournament in Gstaad . At the World Championships in Vienna , Hughes / Claes reached the round of 16, in which they were eliminated against the later world champions Ludwig / Walkenhorst .

In 2018 Brittany Hochevar was Claes' partner. At their first joint appearance at the 4-star World Tour tournament in Xiamen , Claes / Hochevar reached the final, in which they lost against the Canadians Humana-Paredes / Pavan . Claes has formed a new duo with Sarah Sponcil since the end of 2018 . At the 4-star tournament of the World Tour in The Hague , Claes / Sponcil lost in the final against Brazilians Ana Patrícia / Rebecca at the beginning of 2019 .
