North Bay [ ˈnɔɹθˌbeɪ̯ ] is a city in the Province of Ontario (Northeastern Ontario Region), Canada . North Bay owes its name to its position on the shores of Lake Nipissing and is the capital of the Nipissing District . The total area of the city is 314.92 km².

Geography and climate

North Bay is located approximately 345 kilometers north of Toronto , Ontario . The city lies on the Canadian Shield and therefore has a different geography than southern Ontario. This location results in a more rugged landscape of the surrounding area. North Bay is on the watershed of the Ottawa River and the Great Lakes . In the city there are branches of the highways 11 and 17 ; This makes North Bay a main route of transportation for Northern Ontario. It is the southernmost stop on the Ontario Northland Railway . North Bay has an air connection through Jack Garland Airport.

The climate in North Bay is typical of northern Ontario, namely generally drier than that of southern Ontario due to the greater distance to the Great Lakes . Due to the rather cold Lake Nipissing , the climate of the region is cooler in comparison.

Although Wing 22 used to be a large-scale station, it only employs around 500 people today. North Bay is also home to The Algonquin Regiment, A Coy, a reserve unit of the Canadian Army. The city has extensive waterfront development plans. In the 1980s, a boardwalk was created along Lake Nipissing that is a mile long and is adjacent to the town center. A miniature train and two old carousels (made by local artisans) have been purchased, which are an attraction for both tourists and locals. A former Canadian Pacific Railway station is currently under renovation in the new community park with the intention of connecting the waterfront with the city center when it opens.
