The Lake Nipissing ( French Lac Nipissing ) is a lake in the Canadian province of Ontario .
It lies between the Ottawa River and Georgian Bay and is the fifth largest lake in Ontario. With an average depth of 4.5 m, Lake Nipissing is extremely shallow. He owns numerous islands.
The city with the largest population is North Bay (about 52,000 inhabitants) on the northeastern shore of the lake . The first European to sight the lake was the French explorer Étienne Brûlé in 1610 . Nipissing means "big water" in the language of the indigenous people (see Algonquin languages ).
