Spitzemberg , from 1893 also Hugo von Spitzemberg , is the name of a noble family from Lorraine and later from Württemberg .

Ancestral castle

Spitzemberg Castle stood on a 641 meter high mountain cone about 8 km east of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges . A first fortress was supposedly built over Gallo-Roman remains during the time of the Hungarian invasions . In the 12th century, Spitzemberg belonged to the Lords of Paroye. In 1243, Duke Matthew II of Lorraine took possession of the castle. In 1550 the complex served as a widow's residence for Christina of Denmark . In the Thirty Years' War and in the First World War , the Spitzemberg was used as a military base; On the summit is a memorial of the 152nd French Infantry Regiment , which commemorates the costly battles with German troops in September 1914. Only small remains of the surrounding walls and the foundation walls of the keep have been preserved from the castle .
