Matthew II (* around 1193; † February 9, 1251 ) was Duke of Lorraine from 1220 to 1251. He was the younger son of Duke Frederick II and Agnes von Bar .

Life

In 1220 he followed his brother Theobald I. He had to set up a Wittum almost immediately for his sister-in-law Gertrud von Dagsburg, Theobald's widow, including the city of Nancy , which already two or three months after Theobald's death with his opponent Theobald I , Count married of Champagne and King of Navarre . In addition, he had to recognize Theobald von Champagne as liege lord for the city of Neufchâteau . His hope, however, of getting hold of the county of Metz through his marriage , was dashed, whereupon he immediately dismissed Gertrud. Since Gertrud had no children in her third marriage, Nancy returned to Lorraine after her death - she died before 1225.

Matthew II was a loyal follower of Emperor Frederick II , whom he accompanied on the 1228 crusade . In 1235 Matthew was with Friedrich in Italy.

Domestically, Matthäus was faced with the activities of some gentlemen from Lorraine, including the Count of Lunéville , who was secretly supported by the Count of Bar . The duke's victory led to an exchange of territory and the amalgamation of Lunéville with Lorraine . In January 1230 years his opponents were Henry II of Bar , Hugo II of Vaudémont and the Bishop of Toul , who devastated his duchy and conquered some castles. From 1231 to 1234 he again fought together with Heinrich von Bar and the citizens of Metz against Jean I d'Apremont . After the death of Henry II (1240), Matthew tried unsuccessfully to wrest the lost castles from his young son Theobald II . The excommunication of Emperor Frederick II led to his breaking away from the emperor and joining Pope Innocent IV in 1247 .

In 1249 he arranged for his son Friedrich III. marriage to Margaret of Champagne, daughter of Theobald I of Champagne and Navarre.

progeny
