Ludwig I (Vaud)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Louis of Savoy (* after 1253 ; † January 13, 1302 in Naples ) from the family of the Counts of Savoy was the first master of Vaud .

Life

Ludwig was the son of Thomas II of Savoy , Count of Flanders and Beatrice Fieschi . He was originally intended for a spiritual career and already had charities in England. He probably took part in the crusade of Louis the Saint in 1270/71 . After the death of his uncle Philip of Savoy , there were disputes with his brother Amadeus and his nephew Philip about the succession in the county of Savoy . Amadeus prevailed as Count of Savoy and Ludwig was resigned to rule over the Vaud, the Bugey and Valromey . He established the sidelines of the Lords of Vaud. Ludwig expanded the position of the House of Savoy in the area northwest of Lake Geneva by founding Morges and defeated the Lords of Cossonay , whose castellans Nyon and Prangins he confiscated. He founded the Franciscan monastery in Nyon in 1295/96 and acquired Bern castle rights in 1297 . Ludwig died in Naples in 1302 at the court of Charles I of Anjou .
