Grandson Castle

The Barons von Grandson were a wealthy noble family in Vaud . They named themselves after the Grandson Castle southwest of Lake Neuchâtel . They were the predominant sex in northwestern Vaud and built the castles of Belmont , Champvent , La Sarraz and Montricher in addition to Grandson . The Grandson-Belmont sideline split off in 1185. After Ebals IV's death, his sons founded the lines of La Sarraz (Gerhard), Champvent (Heinrich) and Grandson (Peter I). Peter's son Othon held an important position at the court of the English King Edward I , he inherited the goods of the extinct branches of Champvent and La Sarraz. Of Othon's younger brothers, Wilhelm was a member of the English Parliament and carried the title of Lord Grandisson, Gerhard (1275–1278) and Heinrich (1278–1286) were bishops of Verdun . Through the marriage of Othon's nephew Peter II with Blanche, a granddaughter of Count Thomas II of Savoy, the Lords of Grandson became followers of the Counts of Savoy . With the death of Otto III. († 1397) in a duel the Lords of Grandson died out and their property fell to Savoy.
