Otto von Grandson († between July 26 and July 30, 1309 in Sorgues ) was Bishop of Toul in 1306 and Bishop of Basel from 1306 to 1309 .

Life

Otto was the son of Freiherr Jakob von Grandson and comes from the noble family of the Lords of Grandson from Vaud . He was a nephew of Otton de Grandson . He was initially in the service of the English King Edward I and was his envoy to the French court.

He began his career as a clergyman in England in 1303, where he held charities in Mancetter, Pickill, Wilquinton and York . He also had canons in Autun and Lausanne and in 1304 became provost of the Lausanne cathedral chapter . Otto became bishop of Toul in 1306. He tried to put the coinage in order and to make peace between the Duke of Lorraine and Count Reginald von Bar. He came into conflict with the cities of Toul, Metz and Verdun ( Clemens V tried to introduce tithe for the church). He was able to put down an uprising with the help of Duke Theobald II of Lorraine .

When the Pope made the Bishop of Basel Bishop of Mainz in 1306, Otto was appointed his successor, but without consulting the responsible Basel cathedral chapters and despite a lack of knowledge of German. Because of its anti-Habsburg attitude were his regalia of King I. Albrecht denied. It was only after the king's assassination on May 1, 1308, that his successor Henry VII confirmed him . In 1309 he confirmed Pruntrut the town charter and the king sent him as envoy to the Pope in Avignon , where he fell ill and died. He was buried in the Klingental monastery .
