Gerhard von Wippingen (* 1262 / 67 ; † 17th March 1325 probably in Delémont ) was from 1302 to 1309 Bishop of Lausanne and from 1309 to his death Bishop of Basel .

Life

Gerhard came from the noble family de Vuippens from the area of Freiburg in Üechtland . His parents were Ulrich von Wippingen and Agnes von Grandson . He was introduced to the English court by his uncle Otton de Grandson . He had numerous benefices in England. In 1286 he was rector of Waddington and Canon of York , in 1289 rector of Greystoke and canon of Lichfield and in 1290 archdeacon of Richmond. Between 1299 and 1302 he undertook diplomatic missions to King Philip the Handsome of France and Pope Boniface VIII on behalf of King Edward I of England . In 1302, under the influence of his uncle, he was appointed Bishop of Lausanne. During his tenure there were repeated conflicts with Ludwig II , Lord of Vaud. He was able to settle a dispute with the city of Lausanne from the time of his predecessor by accepting a settlement. When the Basel Bishop Otto von Grandson died on the return journey from Avignon to his diocese, Gerhard was appointed Bishop of Basel by the Pope in 1309. In the meantime, however, the Basel cathedral chapter had elected Provost Lüthold II von Rötteln as bishop. The resulting two-year schism was ended in May 1311 by Lüthold's resignation. Gerhard, who was meanwhile at the papal court in Avignon, was able to take possession of his diocese in 1312. He mainly resided at the episcopal palace in Delémont and was represented in Basel by his vicar general , the Lausanne canon Otto von Avenches. In 1296 a war began with the Counts of Neuchâtel , which further burdened the finances of the indebted diocese. Only an intervention by the Pope, who threatened Gerhard with withdrawal of the diocese, could the conflict end in 1317. In Basel, the bishop persecuted the Beguines and Minorites suspected of heresy , which led to unrest in the city in 1320. In 1321 the Pope lifted the interdict imposed by Gerhard . In 1324 the feudal lordship over the county of Pfirt was lost to Habsburg . Gerhard probably died in 1325 at his castle in Delémont. He was buried in the Basel Minster .
