Johann von Chalon-Arlay
John of Chalon-Arlay (* 1300 / 01 , † May or June 1335 ) was from 1325 to 1328 Bishop of Basel and 1328-1335 Administrator of the diocese of Basel and bishop of Langres .
Life
Johann came from the Chalon-Arlay sideline of the House of Burgundy-Ivrea . His parents were Johann I , Lord of Arlay, and Margaret of Burgundy († after 1300), a daughter of Duke Hugos IV of Burgundy . Hugo von Chalon , the Bishop of Liège and Archbishop of Besançon, was his uncle. Johann became canon in Langres and Besançon in 1316 , and in Paris in 1317. In 1318 the Pope appointed him cathedral dean of Langres, which met with resistance there. Thereupon Johann left the city and started studying law. After the death of Basel bishop Gerhard von Wippingen on March 17, 1325, the Basel cathedral chapter elected Hartung Münch von Landskron as bishop on March 20 . However, the choice was made by Pope John XXII. not recognized, the on March 30th by Philip of Valois , the future King Philip VI. of France, supported Johann appointed Bishop of Basel. Although the Pope initiated a lawsuit against Hartung, Johann did not succeed in asserting himself in Basel. In 1327 Johann allied himself with Duke Albrecht II of Austria , whom he enfeoffed with the county of Pfirt . When Pope Hartung excommunicated on July 29, 1327, large parts of the population in Basel succumbed to an epidemic and Kleinbasel was almost completely destroyed by fire, Hartung gave in to the growing pressure and concluded an armistice on August 13, 1328 with the one shortly before April 6, Johann appointed Bishop of Langres. Hartung kept his benefices , but handed over the diocese to Johann, whom the Pope allowed to keep the diocese of Langres in addition to the administration of Basel. However, the dispute, which lasted from 1325 to 1328, left a heavy burden of debt. Johann entered Basel for the first time in 1330 , but the de facto leadership of the diocese was carried out by the vicar general and prior of Saint Alban Johannes Stocker. Johann died in 1335 in May or June. Since he was not mentioned in any obituarium, the exact date of his death remains unknown.
