Hugo IV (Burgundy)
Hugo IV (born March 9, 1212 in Villaines-en-Duesmois ; † October 27, 1272 ) was Duke of Burgundy (from 1218 to 1272) and titular king of the short-lived Latin kingdom of Thessalonike (from 1266 to 1272).
Life
He was the son of Duke Odo III. of Burgundy and the Alix of Vergy .
He incorporated the already existing duchy of Burgundy into the counties of Grignon (the former Auxois ) and Chalon . Chalon also included the Charolais and the Terre d'Auxonne , which the duke acquired in exchange for the Salins estate , which he had bought in 1225 . Together with his son Robert II , Hugo brought the left bank of the Saône under Burgundian control and also prepared the incorporation of the Free County of Burgundy .
Between 1239 and 1241 Hugo first went on a crusade ( crusade of the barons ). Later he also took part in the crusade to Egypt ( Sixth Crusade , 1248-1250) under the leadership of King Louis IX. part. Unlike the main army, he did not spend the winter in Cyprus , but in the Principality of Achaia , whose princes he was able to persuade with his sizable fleet to take part in the crusade. During the fighting for al-Mansura (1249-1250) Hugo held the command of the camp.
In return for his support in his attempt to recapture Constantinople, Baldwin II , the dethroned last emperor of the Latin Empire , granted him rights to the (titular) kingdom of Thessalonica in 1266 . In 1270 Hugo also took part in the crusade against Tunis ( Seventh Crusade ).
