Hartung Münch

Hartung Münch von Landskron (* around 1265 - † October 25, 1332 ) was Bishop of Basel from 1325 to 1328 .

Life

Hartung Münch was born around 1265 as the son of the Basel mayor Heinrich I and Werentrudis von Wangen.

The Münch family belonged to the ministerial nobility and were one of the most distinguished families in Basel. Hartung's father was Heinrich I. Münch von Landskron († after November 15, 1287) and has been mentioned frequently as the mayor of Basel since 1267. His mother was Werentrudis von Wangen and was documented several times between 1257 and 1287. Hartung had at least three brothers Konrad V, Burkhard I († September 26, 1339) and Heinrich II. The first two also played an important role in the story of the city of Basel.

Hartung Münch was first mentioned in a document in 1287. From 1287 he was a clergyman and during 1298 and 1299 he was canon at Basel Minster . In 1303 Hartung Münch was the owner of ten beneficiaries in the margraviate of Baden . In 1313 he was canon at the Strasbourg Cathedral . In 1321 he was appointed archdeacon of Basel Minster.

On March 22, 1325 he was elected Bishop of Basel by the cathedral chapter . His predecessor Gerhard von Wippingen died on March 17th. On April 3, 1325 it was consecrated by Archbishop Vitalis of Besançon. In 1328 he resigned as bishop. According to the official Liber vitae of the Basel Minster, the deposed bishop died on October 25, 1332 and was buried in the Basel Minster. He found his final resting place in the chapel next to the old bell tower, which he himself had built. This tower is known today as the Münch or All Saints Chapel and the collective grave of several clergymen of the Münch family is located here.
