Theobald II (Lorraine)

Theobald II (* 1263 ; † 13 May 1312 ) was Duke of Lorraine from 1303 to 1312. He was the son of Duke Friedrich III. and Marguerite de Champagne.

biography

In 1298 he took part in the battle of Göllheim against the German King Adolf von Nassau , in the course of which the king fell. In 1302 he fought for the French king Philip IV in the battle of the spurs against the Flemings , in 1304 in the battle of Mons-en-Pévèle . Then he was - together with John II of Brabant and Amadeus V of Savoy - commissioned to negotiate a peace treaty with the Flemings. In 1305 he accompanied Philip to Lyons for the coronation of Pope Clement V.

When Clemens V wanted to introduce tithe to the clergy, Theobald was given the task of enforcing it in Lorraine. When Rainald von Bar , Bishop of Metz , opposed the decision, a war broke out that ended to the advantage of the Duke of Lorraine.
