Corrie ten Boom (ca.1921)

Corrie ten Boom , actually Cornelia Arnolda Johanna ten Boom (born April 15, 1892 in Amsterdam ; † April 15, 1983 in Placentia , California ), was a Dutch Christian who saved the Jews and founded an underground organization during the Nazi German occupation of the Netherlands who saved numerous Jews from the Holocaust . For this she was later awarded the honorary title Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial .

Life

Parents home in Haarlem

Her father ran a watchmaker's shop in Haarlem , where Corrie ten Boom grew up in a large family. Corrie trained as a watchmaker in Basel in 1920 and was the first woman in the Netherlands to receive a watchmaker's diploma in 1924. The parents and the aunts living in the house were committed members of the Dutch Reformed Church with many friendly connections to Jews, whom the father especially loved as “God's ancient people”. Corrie ten Boom remained unmarried and worked in her father's watchmaking business before the Second World War . She also worked in the Sunday school of her parish, for which she trained as a religion teacher in addition to working in her parents' business.

When the war reached the Netherlands in 1940 and the German occupiers wanted to deport all Jews to the concentration camps, Corrie ten Boom and her family hid and looked after several Jewish families in their house behind a shed. This went well for a year and a half, although it was becoming increasingly difficult to get enough food for everyone. In April 1944, Corrie ten Boom was set up by a collaborator , she and her family were denounced and arrested. Finally Corrie ten Boom was deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp together with her sister . Unlike her sister Betsie ten Boom, she survived the ordeal. With a Bible that she was able to smuggle in past the control when she was admitted to the camp, she secretly held Bible lessons in the camp to strengthen the will of many fellow prisoners to survive.

After the war Corrie ten Boom founded rehabilitation centers for the victims of the National Socialist tyranny and campaigned for reconciliation between victims and perpetrators. She preached not only in the Netherlands, but also in Germany and in over 60 other countries. Her central theme was forgiveness , which is only possible with God's help. She wrote some books; Her autobiography The Refuge (original: De Schuilplaats ) was filmed in 1975 by James F. Collier under the title The Hiding Place .

Corrie ten Boom was knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands in recognition of her selfless service during World War II. Her parents' house is now the Corrie ten Boom Museum and has been restored to its 1944 state for visitors, so that the hiding place behind a false wall in her former bedroom, where Jews and members of the Dutch underground movement were housed, can be viewed.
