Ronald Vernie "Ron" Dellums (born November 24, 1935 in Oakland , California - † July 30, 2018 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Between 1971 and 1998 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives ; he later became mayor of his hometown of Oakland.

Career

Ron Dellums attended public schools in his homeland. Between 1954 and 1956 he served in the Marine Corps . He then attended Oakland City College until 1958 and then San Francisco State College until 1960 . This was followed by studies at the University of California at Berkeley until 1962 . From 1962 to 1964 he was a social worker in the Mental Health Department of the California Department of Health. He served as the Bayview Community Center's program director in 1964 and 1965 . In the following years Dellums worked in various positions on social projects in his home country. He also gave lectures at several universities. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. From 1967 to 1970 he was a member of the Berkeley City Council. In July 1972 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach , where George McGovern was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the 1970 congressional election , Dellums was elected to the 7th constituency of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Jeffery Cohelan on January 3, 1971 . After 13 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on February 6, 1998 . From 1975 he represented there as the successor to Pete Stark the eighth district of his state. During his time as a congressman, the end of the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the end of the civil rights movement took place. From 1993 to 1995 Dellums was chairman of the armed forces committee . In the meantime, he also chaired the District of Columbia Administration Committee. He was also temporarily a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Postal Committee and the Secret Service Committee. Dellums' name is on President Richard Nixon'sEnemy List ” . He was a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus and at times its chairman. In 2000 Dellums received the Thomas Merton Award .

After his time in Congress, Ron Dellums worked as a lobbyist. Between 2007 and 2011 he was mayor of Oakland, replacing Jerry Brown ; he did not apply for a possible second term. Jean Quan was elected to succeed him. Dellums was married for the second time and had five children.
