Mike Garcia (born April 24, 1976 in Santa Clarita , California ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). Since a by-election on May 12, 2020, he has represented the 25th congressional electoral district of the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Garcia was born to parents who immigrated from Mexico in 1959. He attended the United States Naval Academy after graduating from high school in 1994. He then attended the US Navy's flight school in 1998. In 2003 he took part in the Iraq war as a fighter pilot . He then went into the private sector and worked for a company specializing in the defense industry.

In a successful election campaign, Garcia prevailed against Christy Smith at the beginning of May 2020 and succeeded the Democrat Katie Hill, who resigned as a result of a sex scandal, as a member of the 25th congressional electoral district . His victory was already considered likely in advance. It was the first Republican victory in a Democrat-run Congressional electoral district since 1998.
