Christy Smith (born July 15, 1969 in Würzburg , Germany ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She has been a member of the California State Assembly since December 3, 2018 , representing the 38th district of the state.

Smith ran in a by-election for the mandate of the 25th seat of the state of California in the United States House of Representatives after the previous incumbent Katie Hill resigned over a sex scandal. She lost the election to Mike Garcia , but will run for the seat again in the November 2020 House election .

Career

Smith was born in 1969 in a US Army hospital in Würzburg. Her parents returned to the United States six months later. In 1993 she received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles . Prior to entering politics, Smith worked for the United States Department of Education during the Clinton administration .

In 2016, Smith ran for the 38th district of the California state parliament. The race featured no incumbent as Republican Scott Wilk had chosen to run for the California Senate . Although she led the field in the primary in June, Smith finally lost to Republican Dante Acosta with 47.13% to 52.87%. In 2018 she ran again for the 38th district against Acosta and won with 51.2% to 48.8%. She then became chair of the Emergency Management Legislative Committee.

On October 28, 2019, the day after Katie Hill announced her intention to step down from Congress, Smith announced that he would run for Hill's congressional seat that had become vacant. Your state assembly district is more than half the congressional district.

The primary, which took place on March 3, 2020, was won by Smith with 36.2%. She prevailed against Steve Knight and Cenk Uygur , among others . In the runoff election, Smith moved together with Mike Garcia. This she lost with 45.1% of the vote against Garcias 54.9%.
