Cenk Uygur (2010)

Cenk Kadir Uygur (born March 21, 1970 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish -born American radio and Internet presenter, political activist and politician. He became known as the co-founder and main presenter of the web-based news talk show The Young Turks .

Life

Uygur was born in Turkey and grew up there until he was eight when his family moved to the United States and settled in New Jersey . Later, he attended East Brunswick High School and studied management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania ( "Penn") and Law at Columbia Law School . At Penn, he played rugby among others, Greg Lippmann, a central role in the months before the global financial crisis played .

He then worked for a New York law firm for some time, but soon began working as a radio host and commentator for a local station in Miami . At that time he became friends with the presenter Ben Mankiewicz . After his show was canceled, Uygur found work as a writer for television in Los Angeles .

In February 2002 he decided to start his own talk show and broadcast it on an open channel ; he called them The Young Turks , a name he had previously used on his own projects. For the new show, he engaged Mankiewicz, his childhood friend David Koller and Jill Pike. In addition, several interns were hired, some of whom later became permanent employees. Since December 2011, TYT has also been broadcast on the channel Current TV, founded by Al Gore , but Uygur and his team left the channel in 2013 after it was bought by Al Jazeera to continue their work in their own studio. Uygur is also a guest commentator for MSNBC and the Huffington Post .

Controversies on previous statements

In 2012 he came under fire for denying the Turkish genocide against the Armenians in previous publications from 1991 and 1999 . He later stated that he did not know enough about the subject at the time and retracted his earlier statements and fully acknowledged the genocide. In 2018, Ana Kasparian commented on this on her YouTube TV show NoFilter , referring to a recently previously broadcast episode of The Young Turks. He subsequently refuted the allegations of still denying the genocide several more times.

In 2017 Uygur came under criticism again for drastic and derogatory statements about women, which he had made in his blog at the time until 2004. Uygur distanced himself from his earlier statements and apologized.

Political career

Uygur supported the progressive US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and appeared in several of his campaign events in 2016. Uygur is one of the founders of Justice Democrats and Wolf PAC, a non-partisan Political Action Committee that seeks to amend the constitution to prevent large donations from companies and entrepreneurs to candidates and parties.

On November 12, 2019, he voted for Bernie Sanders as the Democratic presidential candidate in the 2020 elections (" endorsement "). Two days later, on November 14, 2019, he announced that he would run for the United States House of Representatives in the 25th Congressional District of California . Open primaries for extraordinary and regular elections took place in this district on March 5. He received endorsements for his candidacy from Bernie Sanders, Andrew Yang , three other Democratic presidential candidates, MP Ro Khanna , his staff Ana Kasparian, John Iadarola, Emma Vigeland, political commentator Kyle Kulinski , actor John Cusack and many other celebrities . After criticizing Uygur's earlier statements, he announced on December 13, 2019 that he would not accept endorsements, after which Sanders and Khanna withdrew theirs.

After announcing his candidacy, Uygur was attacked by social media accounts and the press for making controversial statements. The New York Times claimed that he had admitted that the US neo-Nazi David Duke was not a racist. Uygur said that he called Duke an anti-Semite and a racist several times during an hour-long interview and closed the interview sarcastically. The New York Times corrected itself afterwards. It was also criticized for defending Harvard University's male soccer team in 2016 after it was revealed that its members rated the attractiveness of women on a scale of 1 to 10. Uygur said he did not want to control the men's private comments.

On election day, Uygur got fourth place in both elections and was thus far from making it into the runoff elections. The following day he thanked his supporters.

Private life

Uygur comes from a Sunni family but describes himself as an agnostic . He is married to family therapist Wendy Lang Uygur, with whom he has a son born in 2010 and a daughter born in 2012.

reception

In the US film Mad As Hell (2014), Andrew Napier documents the presenter's life.
