Amerish B. "Ami" Bera (born March 2, 1965 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Ami Bera is the son of Indian immigrants. He grew up in La Palma and then studied biology at the University of California in Irvine until 1987 . He then studied medicine at the same university until 1991. After that he worked as a doctor. Between 2004 and 2007 he was the assistant dean of the medical school at the University of California at Irvine. He then served as the chief medical officer in charge of the health department for the Sacramento County Administration . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 2010 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the 2012 congressional elections , Bera was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of California , where he succeeded George Miller on January 3, 2013 , who moved to the eleventh district. Bera won the election with 51.1 percent of the vote against Republican Dan Lungren (48.9 percent). After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Ami Bera is married and has one daughter. The family lives privately in Elk Grove .
