Dragostea din tei ( Romanian , literally translated love from the linden tree ) is a song by the Moldovan pop group O-Zone and their most successful single. The composer and lyricist of the song is band leader Dan Bălan . Originally the single was only released in Romania in August 2003, but also in other European countries in spring 2004.
In Germany, the song took first place for 14 weeks, making it the most successful single in the 2004 annual charts and the third biggest hit of the 2000s. In England it reached number 3 and in the US Pop 100 number 72. In France, the song was number 1 for 15 weeks . The title also topped the Austrian, Swiss, Norwegian (9 weeks), Danish (one week) and Belgian-Walloon charts (11 weeks). An entry into the charts also succeeded in New Zealand , the song was even played in South Korea , where in April 2006 it entered the airplay charts. The band themselves explained their success with the simplicity of the song and with the fact that by the time of publication there were hardly any songs of this type on the market.
The song became known in the USA from December 2004 through a Flash video on the Newgrounds platform , in which Gary Brolsma moved his lips and danced in sync with the song he called "Numa Numa". It received over 160 million views in the first three months of its launch and is considered the world's first viral video.
The popular cover version Dragostea Din Tei by Haiducii , which appeared around the same time in Western Europe , also reached the top of the singles charts, also in Italy and Sweden .
background
The semantics of the linden tree ( tei ) are of great literary importance in the Romanian language. One of the most important Romanian poets, Mihai Eminescu , wrote numerous poems with references to the linden tree. Its importance is also reflected on the 500-lei banknote , where Eminescu is depicted with a linden leaf. Furthermore, the love from the linden or in the linden is deeply anchored in Romanian folklore and is viewed as a true, strong and pure love.

- In 2011 the band Jamatami released their single Ma-Ya-Hi which is a cover version of the English version of the song.

text
The best-known lines from the lyrics of the song written in Romanian are the repeated words "nu mă, nu mă iei," from the refrain , from which the name "Numa Numa Song" is derived. Literally “nu mă” means “ not me”, while “nu mă iei,” in this context means: “You won't take me with you”. So is the repeated refrain "You are not taking me, you are not taking me" . The full chorus of the song is:
Vrei să pleci dar nu mă, nu mă iei,
nu mă, nu mă iei, nu mă, nu mă, nu mă iei.
Chipul tău și dragostea din tei
mi-amintesc de ochii tăi.
In German translation:
You want to go, but you take me, don't
take me, take me, don't take me, take me, take me, don't take me.
Your face and the love in the linden tree
remind me of your eyes.
Trivia
The song was satirized by NDR Extra 3 "for" Rainer Brüderle .
