Gabry Ponte

Gabry Ponte (2016)

Gabry Ponte (born April 20, 1973 in Moncalieri near Turin as Gabriele Ponte ) is an Italian DJ and music producer who first attracted attention at the end of the 90s through his participation in the Eurodance project Eiffel 65 . With his self-titled debut album, he also achieved his national breakthrough as a solo artist. In 2019 he achieved another commercial success in Europe with a revision of Lum! X 'Bootleg for the song Monster by Meg & Dia. In addition to his solo publications, he also acts as a songwriter and producer, including being involved in Dragostea din tei by Haiducii and Tacatá by Tacabro .

Career

Until 1998: musical beginnings

At the age of 17 Gabry Ponte performed in various discos in Turin and the surrounding area. When he finally sent some of his productions to the Italian record label Blisscorporation , they noticed him and signed him. He initially worked with the Da Blitz project , where he was able to gain experience in the use of computer technology for music production. He also performed as a trio with his friends Gianfranco Randone alias Jeffrey Jey and Maurizio Lobina and experimented in the studio.

1998 to 2005: Eiffel 65

In 1998, Ponte founded the Eiffel 65 project together with Jeffrey Jey and Lobina . Her debut single Blue (Da Ba Dee) was first released in October 1998 and became a commercial success in her home country. After being released internationally the following year, the song landed a number one hit in over 15 countries and climbed into the top 10 of the US charts. In the following years they were repeatedly nominated for a Grammy award for the song . The follow-up single Too Much of Heaven was released in spring 1999 and was able to follow on from the success of Blue (Da Ba Dee) in Europe on a small scale . In contrast to its predecessor, influences from the hip-hop scene were recorded in Too Much of Heaven and processed with autotune. The song is said to be the first example of its kind.

At the same time as the third single Move Your Body , Eiffel 65 released their first studio album Europop . The single developed into another Europe-wide success, with top placements in Austria, Denmark and France, among others. The official music video is a continuation of the music video by Blue (Da Ba Dee) . The studio album was able to advance to below the top of the US Billboard charts and also achieved success in various European charts. As the last single they released the song My Console , which, however, could not follow the success of the predecessor.

In 2001 they landed with the single Lucky (In My Life) from their second studio album Contact! another Europe-wide success. The song was published in different versions in different western to central European countries. The fifth single, Losing You , sung by Elena Flochen, became a top 10 hit in Canada. The studio album itself was made during their bus tour through Los Angeles and was released in July 2001 and achieved high placements in Italy. The following Italian-language album Eiffel 65 experienced a similar experience , the singles of which all made it into the top 25. Quelli che non hanno età reached the top five.

In 2005, Ponte decided to leave the group to focus more on his solo career. Jeffrey Jey and Lobina continued the project alone until 2006, when they later announced that they would appear as Bloom 06 from now on, leaving Eiffel 65 behind.

2002 to 2003: Breakthrough as a solo artist with Gabry Ponte

In July 2001 Gabry Ponte released his first solo single Got to Get (Don Don) on the record label National DJ Event . In April of the following year the song Time to Rock followed , to which the Italian singer Stefania Piovesan contributed her vocals. The song reached number 33 on the Italian singles chart. With the Italo-Dance song Geordie , which he released in October 2002, he was able to land a top 10 hit in the Italian singles charts. The song is based on the song of the same name interpreted by the Italian cantautore Fabrizio De André .

On November 26, 2002, Ponte released his self-titled debut album, which included his three previously released singles. With the album he moved up to number 16 on the Italian album charts. The song De musica tonante was released as the third single. Music was produced in collaboration with the Italian DJ Mario Fargetta and is based on the song of the same name by John Miles from 1976. The last song from Gabry Ponte was The Man in the Moon . He also attracted attention in the remix area. He had a big hit in Italy with his Giulia remix, which he produced for DJ Lhasa . In the same year he won the Italian Dance Music Awards .

2004 to 2005: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. DJ

Gabry Ponte, 2011

In 2004 he released his second album Dr. Jekyll & Mr. DJ . In addition to the single Figli di Pitagora and Depends on You, this also contains the song La danza delle streghe , which became a top 10 hit in Italy. With Figli di Pitagora , Ponte also released his first single in Germany. This also succeeded in entering the German single charts. An earlier version of the song was featured on the Eiffel 65 album Eiffel 65 . Gabry Ponte was supported vocally on this single by the Italian singer Little Tony .

In addition, this year Ponte produced the Romanian singer Haiducii , who celebrated great success throughout Europe with her song Dragostea din tei . Especially the remixes by Gabry Ponte made the song suitable for a club. As a result, Dragostea din tei reached the top position in the Italian single charts.

In 2005 Gabry Ponte released his first DJ set in Italy. This includes songs by Gigi D'Agostino , Infernal and Roberto Molinaro , among others . At the same time, the singles La libertà , Elektro Muzik Is Back and Underground were released . La libertà forms a crossover between opera singing and Italodance.

2006 to 2008: First EP & Gabry 2 o

In 2006 Ponte produced the European hit Just Be Good to Me for the Italian pop duo Karmah, as well as their own dance remix. The original lyrics for this song were written by Gianfranco Randone (Jeffrey Jey), former front man and singer of Eiffel 65, back in 1997. The single Tom's Diner was released as the follow-up single to Just Be Good to Me , to which Gabry Ponte contributed two remixes.

Since October 7, 2006, Ponte has been mixing the Tribe program on the Italian radio station m2o , which is broadcast every Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In December 2006 he released the EP According to Gabry Ponte , which includes the singles Elektro Muzik Is Back and Underground released in the previous year .

In early 2007, Ponte released the EP Love Songs in the Digital Age According to Gabry Ponte , which contains seven tracks. As the first single from it he announced The Point of No Return , which is his first single in 2007. The second single was the song I Dream Of You , which was released in the summer of 2007. Gabry Ponte has been hosting the Gabry 2 o program since March 5, 2007 , which also runs on m 2 o.

In the summer of 2008, Ponte released his third studio album Gabry 2 o and contains 13 tracks. The name of the CD Gabry 2o is based on his radio show, which runs regularly on the Italian dance station m 2 o. The song Somebody Called Me was released as the first single in May 2008 .

2009 to 2011: Vivi nell'aria & Dance and Love

In 2009 he first released the Italian song W la guerra from Gabry 2 o . This was followed by the song Dreams , which was created in collaboration with Format C and with which he made a step in the direction of the electro house scene. Also in 2009 was the song Vivi nell'aria , a new recording of the song of the same name by the Italian singer Miani . In addition to the Italian version, there was also an English version entitled You (Livin 'in My Heart) . The title track was mixed by the German producer Manian , producer of Cascada and RIO, among others .

In 2010 the songs Love 2 Part and Sexy DJ followed , which could not bring further success. He also released the song Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood , which he recorded with Cristian Marchi, Sergio D'Angelo and singer Andrea Love. The song Skyride , created together with Zhana, represents another commercial single release. During the year several parts of his compilation series "Dance and Love" were released. The first volume earned him a place in the Italian album charts.

2012 to 2018: Recurring national success

In January 2012 he produced the song Tacatà for the Italian dance-pop project Tacabro , which developed into a Europe-wide summer hit over the course of the summer. In the same year he released the single Beat on My Drum , which he recorded with Belle Perez, Pitbull and Sophia del Carmen . This could reach number 11 of the US Hot Dance Club Songs. Furthermore, there were several collaborations with other artists; he worked with the Austrian DJ duo Darius & Finlay , singer Dorotea Mele and La Familia Loca, among others .

In early 2013 a remake of the song Dragostea din tei followed , which was created in collaboration with his ex-Eiffel 65 colleague Jeffrey Jey. The song has been redesigned in a commercial house style. Together with Dj Matrix he produced the song Fall in Love that same year . On August 6, 2013, Ponte released the track Sexy Swag , which was created in collaboration with the Jamaican musician Shaggy and represented another commercial single. The last release of the year was the song Sunshine Girl , the singing of which was contributed by the American pop singer Amii Stewart .

In 2014, the electro house song La fine del mondo with the Italian pop-rap duo Two Fingerz and the single Buonanotte giorno followed, with which he reached the top 10 of the official charts and the top of the iTunes charts in his home country. Together with Emanuel Nava, he released the track Scream on the record label Blanco y Negro in March 2014 , with which he presented his first release in the field of big room house music. In 2015 the song Showdown was released , which was produced in a quieter style.

In 2016, in collaboration with Two Fingerz member Danti, he published the song Che ne sanno i 2000 , which sold 100,000 times in Italy alone. The successor Tu sei went gold . In 2018 he released the single Quando arrivo io , which he recorded with Junior Cally . It presents a crossover between trap and dubstep music. Beginning in 2018, he published in collaboration with DJ matrix and the rappers Mambolosco and Nashley the song Ghost Blaster , in which he features of psytrance was incorporated and hip-hop. In addition, the song Tanja appeared together with the Italian music project Pop X , for which he also produced an Italodance version.

Since 2019: Monster

After the two Italian-language singles La casa degli specchi and Il calabrone , he released the song Monster in April 2019 in collaboration with the Austrian DJ and producer Lum! X , with which he achieved a European club hit. The song is based on a Melbourne bounce bootleg that Lum! X produced at the end of 2017 for the song of the same name by the US rock duo Meg & Dia from 2006. A remix by the German DJ and producer Robin Schulz released in summer 2019 increased the success.
