RIO is a German DJ - duo , consisting of the two DJs, songwriters and music producers Manuel Reuter and Yann Peifer . The duo celebrated their first big success in 2008 with the song Shine On . With Turn This Club Around they landed their first top 10 hit in 2011. They are primarily active in the areas of deep and tropical house music, while in the course of their careers they also represented reggae and EDM, among other things .

For four years, the voice and face of RIO was the native Londoner Neal Antone, better known as Tony T. After leaving in 2012, singles were recorded with various other singers. Until 2015, U-Jean primarily gave the project his voice and also appeared as the front man of the Cologne-based duo at their live performances and concerts.

Production and members

The two German DJs Manian and Yanou founded the Act RIO in summer 2007, after their great success with joint projects such as Cascada or Tune Up! RIO was initially only intended as an "experimental project". The name is derived from their first recording with the title of the same name, as well as the re-release as De Janeiro . Manian and Yanou are always active as songwriters, composers and producers in their songs. In addition to them, Andres Ballinas, a good friend of the duo, is the author of all the titles.

In addition to their own releases, they often appear as remixers. Songs by artists who are under contract with their own label Zooland Records , such as ItaloBrothers or King & White , as well as old and new single releases by members Manian and Yanou, are mixed by them irregularly in the usual RIO style.

Initially, they released their songs exclusively on the duo's own label, Zooland Records , until they were signed to the German record label Kontor Records in 2011 . Individual songs had already been released via Kontor Records , but no contract for all releases was signed until 2011. Two further contracts for the international release of their songs were signed in 2011 with the Swedish record label Roxy Recordings and the Dutch music label Spinnin 'Records .

The founders Manian and Yanou tend to stay in the background for all videos and live performances. Since Tony T. joined the company in 2007, he has been the face and voice of RIO. Because of this, listeners mistakenly assumed that RIO was Tony T.'s pseudonym. In 2011, he was assigned U-Jean . In 2012 he left and fans were irritated by the video for the title Party Shaker , which was sung by Nicco , in which neither Tony T. nor U-Jean could be seen. For many it was only then that it became clear that RIO was a project between two DJs. U-Jean continues to represent the duo on live performances.

Since Tony T. left the project, although U-Jean is her face on her concerts, single covers and videos, the project has been a duo consisting of Manian and Yanou . Pieces sung by U-Jean are always given the title RIO feat. U-Jean , so he is only identified as a guest musician and is not considered an official band member.

style

From 2008 to 2009, the then trio increasingly produced reggae music , which also picked up traces of dance and electro-pop . After Tony T's departure in 2012, he released the song Way to Rio , in which he revived the old RIO reggae style. Between 2010 and 2011 they increasingly established themselves in the commercial house style with songs like Hot Girl and Like I Love You . With Turn This Club Around , they developed a personal touch that ensured a strong recognition value in other productions. Komodo (Hard Nights) formed an introduction to the, predominantly as EDM called electro-house splint. After returning to more commercial music, they started a small comeback after a year and a half, represented by a deep / tropical house production.

history

2007: beginnings and first successes

The RIO logo in 2008

Yanou and Manian experimented together in their studio, which resulted in a cover of Bellini's famous Samba de Janeiro . The title bore the name RIO on the single, but only in remixed forms by artists such as Spencer & Hill , Stereo Palma or as MYPD by Manian and Yanou themselves. It appeared on many labels across Europe, but the release in Germany was rather less popular. In Spain, this version even made it into the top 10 of the charts.

They took up this project again in the winter of 2007 and mixed the title again. Then, on November 9, 2007, the re-recorded song De Janeiro appeared in stores. The single now also contains an "original version" of the title. The original track RIO appears on this single as a Spencer & Hill remix . Completely surprising and in a very short time, the track developed into an international club anthem. The single could reach number 8 in Spain and number 14 in the Netherlands. Since the new release, the original version of De Janeiro is no longer made known to RIO and is only listed under the new title on samplers and albums.

2008–2009: Breakthrough with Shine On

A few months after the release of De Janeiro , their first remix appeared. Together they mixed the song Cool by Lowrida. The remix was released in February 2008. In May 2008 they served a second time as a remixer. This time they produced their version of the club song Children of the Night by Yanou, a member of the band.

Shortly after the release of the single De Janeiro , the two Cologne producers discovered the then 36-year-old British singer and rapper Tony T. , who finally joined the project as voice and front man. Shortly thereafter, they began working as a trio on new songs and on their debut album.

In June 2008 they released their first own singles Shine On , which took the radio stations by storm. It reached the top of the official charts in southern Europe and the entire Middle East as well as top 25 positions in most other European countries, including number 25 in Germany, 21 in Austria, 17 in Switzerland and number 22 in Spain. The video for the single Shine On was viewed over 30 million times on YouTube alone. "In the beginning no one could have anticipated this huge and incomparable success! We are very lucky to be able to play a live tour around the globe and rock in front of huge crowds every weekend". The single was also in the annual charts of several countries, such as number one in the Israeli annual charts in 2008 and number 99 in Germany.

In September 2008 they appeared for the third time as a remix producer team. This time they took on the 2008 version of Turn the Tide by RIO member Manian and singer Aila. The original comes from the vocal - trance project Sylver from the year 2000.

In December 2008, their third single When the Sun Comes Down was released . In November 2008 it was presented at the Kontor Top of the Clubs Vol. 41 . It also reached the sales charts and moved into the top 10 in the Dutch and Spanish charts and also reached number 22 in the top 100 in the Netherlands. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland it was rather a minor success. In Portugal and the Netherlands, however, the track sold well and reached number 37 in Portugal for 5 weeks. No music video was released for this song or any of the following singles.

On July 10, 2009, After the Love was released. This single was used on the 2009 compilation The Dome Summer . In Austria it was represented in the charts for two weeks and reached number 41. In Germany it was able to place itself for four weeks and reached number 65. In Switzerland the song could not reach a chart position. However, this song again enjoyed great success in the Netherlands and Portugal, where After the Love rose to the top half of the chart.

After the three had another summer hit with After the Love , another remix was released in October 2009. A second time they reinterpreted a song by member Yanou. This time the trio mixed the song Brighter Day .

Serenade was released in November 2009 as the download single Serenade it was not a great success and only rose to 97th place in Germany, where it stayed for a week. However, the song also charted in the Netherlands. There it reached number 30 and stayed in the top 40 for 4 weeks. The single is based on the track of the same name by the American rock band Steve Miller Band from 1976. Because of this, only Steve Miller and C. McCarthy are the songwriters of the Song. This track was also particularly successful in the Netherlands.

2010: First studio album

From 2008 to 2012 Tony T was the face of RIO Here in MegaPark, Mallorca on May 1st, 2011.

In 2010 they worked with the Dutch singer Liz Kay , who is already being produced by the heads of the trio, Manian and Yanou . The titles Something About You and Watching You emerged from their cooperation . The songs came out on February 12, 2010 and became another hit. They were able to advance to 19th place in Bulgaria for nine weeks. In Portugal, the single rose to number 49 and rose to number 34 for six weeks.

On February 19, 2010, the first studio album Shine On (The Album) was released . It contained all previously released singles, as well as some new and unreleased tracks. In September 2010, a deluxe version was released, which also includes the later released track Hot Girl . Neither album reached the top 100.

The seventh single One Heart was released in three variations. Once as a single in February 2010 in the Netherlands. The song was also released as a double single with Can You Feel It , also only internationally, and as a triple single with Can You Feel It and Lay Down in April 2010 in the rest of Europe. In addition to the solo version of One Heart , in which only Tony T. sings the vocals of the song, a second version of the song appeared on the Internet, in which the singer Nina Nyembwe participates. In Holland the single single reached number 24 and was in the charts for 4 weeks. The single also entered the charts in Portugal, where it secured 21st place and stayed in the top 100 for 25 weeks.

Hot Girl was the last single from the album Shine On (The Album) . However, it was only found on the Deluxe Edition. The song was released on October 28, 2010 as a promo single in the Netherlands, where it was alsorepresentedin the mega charts for two weeks. Amusic videowas made for this song for the first timesince After the Love , and it appeared on YouTube on July 13, 2010. In over two years it has been viewed over two million times. The song only had commercial success in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Hot Girl is considered one of the duo's greatest club successes. In addition, the track forms the transition from reggae to house style.

2011: Sunshine and Turn This Club Club Around

On February 11, 2011, RIO released the song Like I Love You as an announcement for the album Sunshine as a single. With Like I Love You they were able to place themselves in the top half of the charts after two years. The video was uploaded to Kontor.TV on January 4th, the YouTube channel of the German record label Kontor Records , and was viewed over 25 million times after a year and a half. The instrumental part of the song has a sample of the song of the same name by the dance trio The Hitmen . Together with Dan Winter under the pseudonym Black Toys , Manian mixed the song in the style of the original. The then Hitmen member Michael Bein contributed a remix under his pseudonym Money-G.

Also in February 2011, RIO mixed the title track of the single Good Vibe , which comes from the Good Vibe Crew together with Cat. The song was released on February 25, 2011 via Zooland Records , but it wasn't a huge hit.

The follow-up single to Like I Love You is titled Miss Sunshine and is a cover of the 2001 song Sunshine by the dance project Dance Nation . This song could be found in all chart lists in German-speaking countries. She was released in May 2012 in parallel with her second studio album Sunshine . On Sunshine there are old songs as well as new songs. The album made it to number 49 on the Swiss album charts and was there for two weeks. Also in May, their single One More Night , a cover of the Phil Collins song of the same name , was released as a download single. She could not achieve chart placements.

In the summer of 2011, Manian and Yanou met the US singer and rapper U-Jean , who has already caused a stir with his collaboration with Carlprit . Together they recorded the song Turn This Club Around , which was released in September 2011 as the announcement for the next studio album. It rose to number one on the iTunes charts, where it lasted for 3 weeks. Turn This Club Around made it to number three in the German single charts and number one in Switzerland in the second week. Among other things, it became the first single that made it into the charts in England and was well represented with a 36th place. It was also her first success in America. Because RIO was able to storm the charts in Canada there. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, RIO received a gold record for over 150,000 units of the song sold. The single was also represented in the annual charts of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Germany, Turn This Club Around made it up to 48, in Austria to 72 and in Switzerland the song reached 60

Also in September 2011 a new remix of the trio was released. This time they produced a remix for the song 1234 by the German rapper Carlprit . This mix became the official and only version of the track. The style of the remix, very unlike her other remixes, is very similar to the theme of her hit single Turn This Club Around . At the same time as the release of their third studio album Turn This Club Around , their thirteenth single Animal was released , which they recorded with rapper U-Jean after the success of Turn This Club Around . The song climbed to 48th place in Germany, 33rd in Austria and 51st in Switzerland. Many critics compare the single with the song Levels by Avicii .

In December 2011, the single Night Nurse by Manian and Yanou's project Cascada was released , in which her current singer Tony T. participated. They released the track as Cascada feat. RIO The single could not reach any chart positions.

2012: Turn This Club Around (Deluxe Edition)

In March 2012, Tony T. , the previous face of RIO, announced his departure from the group in order to concentrate on his solo career. Shortly thereafter, he also released his own single called Way to Rio .

After Tony T. had disconnected from the dance project, Manian and Yanou were on their own again and together as RIO they produced a remix for the song Rock This Club by King & White in collaboration with Cimo. Like Carlprits 1234, this mix became the title song of the single.

U-Jean , RIO's face on their live performances

Shortly afterwards, on May 18, 2012, the 14th single Party Shaker was released . Manian and Yanou recorded the song with the American singer and rapper Nicco , who is known for his collaboration with Darius & Finlay . The music video for the song was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of the Kontor Records label on May 15, 2012 and had over 60 million clicks within half a year. Just a week after its release, the single entered the top ten in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The song could also be found in the annual charts of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2013 the single achieved gold status in Germany.

Parallel to Party Shaker , the song Je Ne Sais Pas was released as a single through Manian and Yanou's side project Azuro together with singer Elly . The two mixed the title song under their pseudonym RIO in the style of the track Party Shaker .

A greatest hits album by the duo was released via the record label Spinnin 'Records in the summer of 2012 in Denmark and the Netherlands , on which all single-chart successes can be found, including the new single Party Shaker .

The 15th single Summer Jam was released on July 27, 2012. The title is a cover of the song of the same name from The Underdog Project from 2000. The song was recorded with the US singer and rapper U-Jean . The official music video was released on the same day. Just a week after its release, the song entered the top 10 of the German single charts and reached seventh place. Summer Jam was also able to place itself in Switzerland and became the second single to make it into the top 3 with an entry at number 2 alongside Turn This Club Around . In Austria it became the first single to make it to the first 3 places, and here too it got into place 2. Summer Jam was also able to reach the German, Austrian and Swiss annual charts of 2012.

Also in July, RIO provided a remix for the song My Life Is a Party by the ItaloBrothers . This remix was especially used on compilations . It became the title track of the single and climbed to the top half of the iTunes charts.

On August 24, 2012, RIO released a deluxe version of the album Turn This Club Around , on which the tracks Summer Jam and Party Shaker can be found both as original and remixed versions. Within two days, it reached the top 10 on the iTunes album charts. With this deluxe edition they celebrated their first album chart success in Germany. In the first week it landed at number 66 in the Top 100. This version was also successful in the Austrian and Swiss charts. Here she rose to number 28 in Austria and to number 29 in the album charts.

On September 28, 2012, another remix by the duo was released. This time they mixed the title track of the single Supernova by the band Miami Club. The song was recorded together with rapper Nicci, who was already involved in The Rhythm of the Night by Manian and Yanou's second project, Cascada .

From October 2012 to spring 2013, Manian and Yanou mainly devoted themselves to their solo projects. Yanou released his own single 25 Lightyeras Away and Manian produced his album Hands Up Forever . The duo also worked on their next RIO album, Ready or Not .

2013: Ready or Not and Komodo

In January 2013 they gave numerous concerts such as at the Barstreet Festival in Bern , in Palma or in Berlin . They also uploaded an unplugged version of their hit Turn This Club Around on the official YouTube channel. Furthermore, it was stated on the official Facebook page of the record label Zooland Records on January 17, 2013 that they were working with U-Jean on a new single, the Ready or Not released in May 2013 . In addition, the project was awarded a gold record on January 1, 2013 for the single Summer Jam .

However, a remix of Manian's and Nicco's song Tonight appeared before the releases . It first appeared on Manian's February 2013 album Hands Up Forever . The single was released on May 24, 2013. One week after the release, the song entered the Austrian singles charts. In Germany, the track could storm several download charts.

However, the song Living was previously released in stereo without U-Jean on March 15, 2013. For the vocals they got the Balearic reggae singer Howard Glasford, who is already known from Shakira's hit Un poco de amor . Weeks before it was released, one to two-minute previews of the song were uploaded to video portals such as YouTube , which were clicked on over a thousand times after just a few weeks. The official music video was uploaded to the Kontor Records official YouTube channel the same day it was released . This song also became a hit. It entered the German, Austrian and Swiss charts after just a week.

Since April 2013, the music video for the Track Party Shaker has been at the top of the most watched music videos by a German act of all time with over 100 million clicks. It was commented:

“With this video it should be mentioned that the lead singer Nicco is an American, but the music production (text & composition) comes from Yann Peiffer and Manuel Reuter (alias RIO). Another 0.5 million views for 'Party Shaker' took place on other video sites than YouTube. Party Shaker is by far the most successful piece of music composed by Germans since the beginning of the digital age that found digital distribution within a music video. "

In addition, Like I Love You were at number 9, Summer Jam at number 10, Shine On at number 14 and After the Love at number 16 of the most viewed German music videos.

Two months, on May 10, 2013, after the release Living in stereo , the accompanying album Ready or Not was released . Like all other “RIO albums”, the album consists of two new and all old songs. However, the songs that have been released so far can be found in remix form in this album. There are also two other CDs, one with all the remixes of the dance project and one with a DJ mix. On iTunes , the album reached number 7 on the album charts and number 1 on the dance charts after just a few hours. It also entered the official German album charts after just a week. There it reached place 47. In Switzerland it even reached the top 5 and climbed to place 4. In Austria, place 26 was announced and thus far exceeded the success of its predecessor, Turn This Club Around .

Logo of the mega-mix

The single Ready or Not of the same name was also released on May 10, 2013 . Like many other RIO songs, it was recorded together with the American singer and rapper U-Jean . On iTunes, the track went straight to the top 100 of the song charts. Even in the German single charts, the success did not last long. After just one week, it rose to 54th place. Ready or Not reached number 40 in Austria . In Switzerland, the song was ranked 64th.

The CJ Stone remix version of Like I Love You , the album Ready or Not , entered the Swiss iTunes charts at the same time as the album. In Germany, she barely missed entry. The remix was able to position itself at number 28 in the Swiss charts and thus improve the chart position of the original release from 2011 by over 40 positions.

An eight-minute megamix was released on August 2, 2013 . This consists of the songs Turn This Club Around, Like I Love You, Animal, Ready or Not, Summer Jam, Party Shaker and Shine On. In addition, the various music videos of the songs were cut into one. It was offered for download at the Kontor Summer Jam 2013, as well as a single track on iTunes, and made it into the top 100 of the iTunes charts after just a few hours. The song also entered the singles charts after a week. In Germany it reached number 19, and the mix also rose to number 19 in Austria.

At the end of August 2013, the first previews of their next song Komodo (Hard Nights) appeared . This was published on September 27, 2013 via Kontor. U-Jean also took part in this. A certain similarity between The Code by W&W and Ummet Ozcan has already been criticized. The way the synths are played should be arranged in a similar way. Also, whether the song is a cover version of the legendary piece Komodo by Mauro Picotto was initially suspected and later confirmed, but only the background tones of the chorus are very similar. The title was able to reach the download charts of all online music services in just a few hours. In the singles charts he reached number 58 in Germany.

Another remix by the duo was released in October 2013. It's a reinterpretation of Scooter's 2003 title Maria (I Like It Loud) and will be featured on her album 20 Years of Hardcore . Scooter's version is already a remix. The first version of the song is from 1997 by Marc Acardipane , Marshall Masters and The Ultimate MC under the title I Like It Loud .

2014: European tour and One in a Million

A new single was not announced for a long time after the single Komodo (Hard Nights) released in late summer 2013 . The reason for this was the concentration on a European tour. In addition to the German-speaking countries, concerts also took place in the south, including Spain and Italy, and in the east, including Istanbul, Turkey. However, only U-Jean represented the band. As in 2012, the actual heads of the band, Manian and Yanou, concentrated on their solo careers. Her own singles Bring on the Sun and We Don't Care were released in late 2013 and early 2014.

On February 19, 2014, two records were released in Japan. On the one hand, the “Perfect Edition” was released for the album Ready or Not , released in Europe in 2013, as well as a remix of the single Turn this Club Around . The remix is from DJ Fumi ★ Yeah! and together with the song Komodo (Hard Nights) forms the Perfect Edition of Ready or Not . Both releases were made via Zooland Records and were able to reach the Japanese Billboard Charts. On June 6, 2014 it was announced for the first time that the release of a new single is scheduled for July 2014. It is the single One in a Million sung by U-Jean . Similar to Komodo (Hard Nights) , One in a Million also contains an electro house style. Even before the official release, the song was made available for sale on iTunes and was able to advance into the upper half on the first day. There was also an entry into the Austrian charts at number 62 before the actual release, which is not possible in many countries such as Germany. In Switzerland, the duo also reached number 62 in the first week. In the German single charts, the song rose to number 51. After having dropped out of the charts in Switzerland after just one week, it was able to stay in the top 100 for three weeks in Germany and four more weeks in Austria.

After Manian had celebrated great successes in collaboration with D-Style with the Twoloud project , also far beyond the German border, RIO initially faded into the background. Nevertheless, it was announced on the duo's official Facebook page on November 20, 2014 that Manian, Yanou and Andres Ballinas were working on a new song. Vocals gave another time to U-Jean.

2015: dwindling success

On March 13, 2015, the tracklist of the sampler Kontor Top of the Clubs Vol. 66 was announced. Among them was the song Thinking of You . After the previous singles had been assigned to Bigroom House, this single featured both dance pop and the currently very popular deep house style. For the vocals, the duo brought an unknown singer into the studio. This was shown in the music video, but is not mentioned on the single either. The song was released on March 27, 2015 together with remixes by DJ CJ Stone , who had already remixed the previous single One in a Million , and the German hands-up producers DJ Gollum and DJ Cap. Both remixes quickly gained popularity. In particular, the progressive house version by CJ Stone, reminiscent of Lovers on the Sun , received positive reviews because it contained more features of the RIO style than the original version. Due to the early availability of Thinking of You on iTunes, it reached the top 100 there in several countries, but missed the leap into the official singles charts, making it the first single in three years to miss a place in the charts.

Another RIO single was released on May 22, 2015. This contains the title Sun Is Up . Here U-Jean took part again. Compared to the previous single Thinking of You , the title contains elements based on deep house, but the song is much more in the typical RIO style. The song attracted attention in particular with the elaborate music video that appeared in early June 2015. In the commercial field, Sun Is Up could not come close to following earlier successes. Neither in the download charts, nor in the official singles charts, the track achieved a placement.

In autumn 2015, the duo again released the song Cheers to the Club in collaboration with singer U-Jean . The song was written by U-Jean himself and was supposed to be a solo single. For the first time in over two years, the track contains the classic RIO style, a mixture of electro and commercial house. The music video was created in collaboration with YouTuber and beatboxer Alberto and was released one day after the single was released on October 9, 2015. However, this track was also unsuccessful. Remixes were published by CJ Stone, Rick T & Rick M and Danny Kraviz in hands-up or alternative commercial style.

2017–2018: reboot

On March 16, 2017, “Kontor Records” announced a small comeback for the duo after a year and a half. This took place with the release of the song Headlong , which appeared a day later . The track is based on the fundamentals of deep and tropical house music. At the same time, she embodies different stylistic devices from earlier ATB productions. Headlong quickly reached the charts of several download portals and was praised for its summery atmosphere. With over 11 million views on YouTube, it was able to follow up on earlier times.

Another single followed in July 2017. This is called The Sign and was created in collaboration with the Vengaboys . The track was based on the tropical house style, which was very popular at the time. However, there was no commercial success. In September 2017, the Dutch DJ and producer Kaaze presented a remix of their third single When the Sun Comes Down , which received particular attention through its premiere on the radio show " Hardwell On Air " by the Dutch DJ Hardwell .

On December 7, 2018, RIO released a cover version of The Great Society's 1966 song Somebody to Love , which was produced in a deep house style.

2019: Shine-On -Remake & In Janeiro

In May 2019, RIO released a new version of their then breakthrough Shine On . This was re-recorded with vocals by the Norwegian hip-hop duo Madcon and was released with a new music video and new remixes. At the beginning of August 2019 the song In Janeiro followed .
