Somebody to Love is a rock song by the psychedelic rock band The Great Society , the band of Grace Slick , who later became the singer of Jefferson Airplane . It was released on Autumn Records in 1966 . Shortly thereafter it was taken over for the band Jefferson Airplane and released on April 1, 1967 as the first single from the album Surrealistic Pillow . Rolling Stone magazine included the version of Jefferson Airplane at number 279 in its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time .

The Great Society's version

The piece was written by The Great Society guitarist Darby Slick . The single gained little more than local attention in San Francisco and the Bay Area at the time .

The Jefferson Airplane version

Grace Slick brought the song to the Jefferson Airplane sessions, along with her own composition White Rabbit . The single reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making it the band's first and biggest hit.

The lyrics are in the second person, with slight variations asks: "Don't you need somebody to love? / Wouldn't you love somebody to love? ..." According to Darby Slick, it is about "doubt and disillusionment" , "Doubt and Disillusionment".

Further use

The piece is used in many films, such as B. in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or A Serious Man by Ethan and Joel Coen . It has also been covered a lot, by The Lambrettas , WASP , The Ramones , Jim Carrey for The Cable Guy soundtrack and many more.
