music
The music is characterized by strong contrasts. The piece begins very slowly and slowly. John Miles sings the first verse on the piano . Strings are added in the second half of the verse . This is followed by a fast instrumental part in 7/8 time with the usual instrumentation of a rock band and a short appearance by the lead guitar . The tempo changes abruptly to the beginning and John Miles repeats parts of the first verse. A slow section dominated by strings introduces a second fast section, which is more heavily orchestrated, especially with the continued string arrangements and additional winds , whereby the instrumentation gradually increases here as well. This part goes on without a hard cut to the end, in which the previous elements unite with choir voices to a grand, solemn finale and John Miles sings the first verse again.
