Young Philharmonic Cologne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Junge Philharmonie Köln (also: Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra ; The Chambers ) is a music ensemble founded by Erich Kluge in 1972 . It mainly gives concerts in a small ensemble as a chamber orchestra or salon orchestra and several times a year, in a large ensemble as a symphony orchestra . The ensemble is a self-managed and freely financed young orchestra.

Goal setting

The Junge Philharmonie Köln accompanies young musicians (predominantly advanced students from the Rhenish Conservatories and winners of international soloist competitions) in addition to their musical and academic training and offers young talents the opportunity to present and expand their repertoire both as a soloist and as an ensemble . The aim is to support young musicians, to introduce them to professional music practice and to give them a springboard into their international career start.

Many former members of the Junge Philharmonie Köln then play in professional orchestras or become sought-after soloists.

history

1972 Erich Kluge gave his permanent position as Solo - Double bass player of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich on with the aim to tread new musical paths. He gathered young talents and founded a classical music ensemble with them. At the beginning, the Junge Philharmonie worked at the Cologne University of Education and gained nationwide fame as an “alternative orchestra ”.

After initial successes in Germany, the musicians traveled to the Côte d'Azur to play as a chamber orchestra in the open air, but in tails . There they met the actor Cary Grant , who invited the young musicians to play at the Cannes Film Festival . This was the beginning of a later worldwide concert activity.

Back in Germany, the Junge Philharmonie Köln appeared more frequently on television. On April 3, 1980, for example, they played in the television program Bio's Bahnhof under the baton of former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath Franz Schubert's 5th Symphony .

After the early death of Erich Kluge, violist Volker Hartung took over the direction of the orchestra in 1986, to which he had belonged from the beginning. In the following years he introduced the musicians to ensemble playing and formed a symphony orchestra from a small group of changing musicians. On January 19, 1990, the Cologne Young Philharmonic made its first appearance as a symphony orchestra in the sold-out Cologne Philharmonic . Under Hartung, the Junge Philharmonie Cologne toured all continents and numerous international music festivals .

program

In addition to major venues such as the Sydney Opera House , the orchestra has performed well on smaller stages and plays both E rnste-, U nterhaltungs- as well as F unctional music . The repertoire of the music ensemble ranges from well-known classical chamber and orchestral works to crossovers and interpretations of songs by the Cologne composer Willi Ostermann .

On the 40th anniversary of the Young Philharmonic was development association Friends of the Junge Philharmonie Köln eV launched. The aim of the association is to secure the existence of this unsubsidized and freely financed orchestra.
