Elk Grove is a city in Sacramento County in the state of California , United States , with 131,212 inhabitants (as of 2007 ) and is part of the agglomeration of the California capital Sacramento . The urban area adjoins the Sacramentos directly to the southeast and covers an area of ​​109.0 km². California State Route 99 runs about a mile west of the city . The town of Elk Grove was formed on July 1, 2000 from parts of the former CDPs Elk Grove, Laguna and Laguna West-Lakeside . Before that, Elk Grove was not a parish in the strict sense of the word, but an area administered directly by the county . The name goes back to a hotel built in 1850 on the so-called Monterey Trail.

Along with Roseville in the north and Folsom in the east, Elk Grove is one of the fast growing cities in the suburbs of Sacramento. Between 2004 and 2005, it was even named the fastest growing city in the United States.
