Folsom is a city in Sacramento County in the US state of California , United States and has 69,445 inhabitants (2006). The urban area has a size of 62.6 km². It is located on the American River on the edge of the Central Valley in Northern California. Folsom is named after Joseph Folsom , captain of the US Army and railroad pioneer in the American West.

The place arose in the aftermath of the California gold rush, initially as the terminus of the first railroad in California, which from February 1856 connected the California capital Sacramento with the gold fields on the American River. The Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park is home to a historic hydropower plant built in 1896 that took power from the American River to provide electricity to Sacramento. This facility is now a National Historic Landmark . The river is dammed up above the city by the Folsom Dam to Folsom Lake.

The city's prison, the Folsom State Prison , opened in 1880 , is the oldest in California after San Quentin and was made famous by country singer Johnny Cash .
