The California State Route 99 ( CA 99 for short ) is a state route in the US state of California , which runs in a north-south direction, where it crosses almost the entire Central Valley . The entire length of the Stateroute is an alternative route to Interstate 5 through the eastern, populous parts of the Central Valley. On its way it connects the following cities to the California freeway and expressway system: Bakersfield , Visalia , Fresno , Madera , Merced , Modesto , Stockton, Sacramento , Yuba City and Chico . Almost the entire section south of Sacramento has been developed according to freeway standards and there are plans to convert this section into an interstate . For this, however, some structural changes and modifications would have to be made. The California Department of Transportation plans to designate this section as Interstate 7 and 9 , respectively.
