Jared Huffman (born February 18, 1964 in Independence , Missouri ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Jared Huffman attended William Chrisman High School and then studied political science at the University of California at Santa Barbara . At that time he was also a successful volleyball player . In 1987 he was a member of the American national team for seven months , which at the time was number one in the world rankings in this sport. After studying law at Boston College and being admitted to the bar in 1990, he began working in this profession. He specialized in consumer protection issues. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 2001 and 2006 he served on the board of directors for Marin County's Water District ; from 2006 to 2012 he was a member of the California State Assembly .

In the 2012 congressional election , Huffman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of California , where he succeeded Wally Herger on January 3, 2013 . He achieved a share of the vote of more than 70 percent over his Republican opponent Dan Roberts. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Huffman has repeatedly spoken out in favor of action against global warming .

Jared Huffman is married with two children. The family lives privately in San Rafael . He describes himself as a non-religious humanist . In 2018 he received the Emperor Has No Clothes Award from the Freedom From Religion Foundation .
