Independence is a city in the western US state of Missouri and is located in the metropolitan area of Kansas City . According to the 2010 census , the city had 116,830 inhabitants. It is the seat of administration ( county seat ) of Jackson County .
The city extends over an area of 203 km², the population density is 558 inhabitants per km².

history
Independence was founded on March 29, 1827 and quickly became a major border city. It had the westernmost navigable port on the Missouri that could be reached by steamships.
In the mid-19th century, Independence was set as the starting point of the Oregon Trail .
Independence played an important role in the early history of the Mormon movement. Independence is still the headquarters of various Mormon religious communities, in particular the second largest Mormon church, the Community of Christ , whose temple is here, but also the Hedrickites , the Fettingites , the Church of Christ with the Elijah message and the Cutlerites .

The US President Harry S Truman , who was born in Lamar, Missouri , grew up here and was elected in 1922 as an administrative officer at the local "County Court". After his presidency he returned to Independence and established his presidential library here ( Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum ). His wife Bess Truman was also from Independence.
