The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is an American freethinker organization. It advocates the separation of religion and state as well as informing the population about the topics of atheism , agnosticism and nontheism . She is also the editor of Freethought Today magazine . The FFRF is also involved in Freethought Radio .
history
The FFRF 1976 was founded by Anne Nicol Gaylor and Annie Laurie Gaylor . The latter shares the presidency with Dan Barker . The FFRF now has over 12,000 members. Its headquarters are in Madison , Wisconsin . With the membership fees, for example, processes are supported that strengthen the rights of atheists and support the separation of religion and state. Supporters include Christopher Hitchens , Katha Pollitt , Julia Sweeney , Ellery Schempp, and Matthew LaClair . According to the “Humanist Press Service”, the actress Butterfly McQueen was a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation for decades and considered the association in her will.
Emperor Has No Clothes Award
The Foundation awards since 1999 the Emperor Has No Clothes Award (The Emperor has-no-clothes-price) for "clear language regarding defects of religions", according to the Association ( "plain speaking" on the short comings of religion ) . The name of the award refers to the fairy tale The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen , which criticizes gullibility and the uncritical acceptance of authorities.
