Edward C. Marshall
Edward Colston Marshall (born June 29, 1821 in Woodford County , Kentucky , † July 9, 1893 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Edward Marshall attended Center College in Danville and then studied at Transylvania University in Lexington . He then completed another degree at Washington College , later Washington and Lee University . During the Mexican-American War , Marshall served in the US Army . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in San Francisco. Later he moved his residence and his law firm to Sonora . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the state-wide held congressional election of 1850 Marshall was elected for the first seat of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded George Washington Wright on March 4, 1851 . Since he withdrew his candidacy for re-election in 1852, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1853 . This was determined by the discussions about the question of slavery .
After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Marshall practiced law in Marysville . In 1856 he ran unsuccessfully for election to the US Senate . He then moved to Kentucky, where he worked as a lawyer for 21 years. In 1874 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in that state. In 1877 he returned to San Francisco, where he continued to practice as a lawyer. Edward Marshall served as Attorney General of California between 1883 and 1886 . He died in San Francisco on July 9, 1893.
