Sonora is a city of over 4,000 people in the center of the US state of California . It is located in Tuolumne County and forms its administrative seat ( County Seat ).

Geography and location

The city is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada , between the Central Valley and the Stanislaus National Forest . A few kilometers to the west is the New Melones Lake , which is dammed by the New Melones Dam , one of the 70 highest dams in the world. With its location in Tuolumne County, Sonora is the " Heart of Gold Country ".

history

It was named by settlers from Sonora , Mexico , who came to California during the gold rush. The exact date of the city's foundation is given as 1848.

Infrastructure

Sonora has an enormous historical charm with buildings from the 19th century. Many galleries and theaters are represented in Sonora. After the metropolises of Los Angeles and New York , the town is considered to be the one with the most film recordings in the USA, and over 300 films have been shot here.

The city is on California State Route 49 , which runs north to south, and California State Route 108 , which runs west to east over the Sonora Pass over the mountains.
