The Sonora Pass (part of California State Route 108 ) is a mountain pass in the US state of California . It connects the cities of Sonora in the west and Bridgeport in the east of the Sierra Nevada .

The highest point is at 2933 meters. This makes it the second highest pass behind the Tioga Pass , which is 3,031 meters high. The road is steep in the west and has gradients of up to 26 percent. It is also curvy in places. Therefore, driving in particularly long or heavy vehicles is not recommended. Like many passes in the Sierra Nevada, the pass is closed during the winter months.

description

The entrance to the pass is in the village of Sonora, Tuolumne County, at an intersection with California State Route 49 at an elevation of approximately 550  meters . From here the road runs east through various smaller towns. In the further course the road gains height and orientates itself roughly parallel to the river North Fork Tuolumne . Between Pinecrest and Strawberry , the pass crosses the South Fork Stanislaus River . About 23 km further, the road passes above Donell Lake , a reservoir of the Middle Fork Stanislaus River located at about 1400  m .

In the next 32 km to the actual pass, the road becomes more winding and steeper, here the route reaches gradients of up to 26%.

At the height of the pass, the road is crossed by the Pacific Crest Trail . The pass road runs then in the summit area of 10 km within the training area Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center . The road now descends in relatively gentle terrain and ends on US Highway 395 near Bridgeport.
