He was selected in the 1971 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers , where he was the starting quarterback for eight years and was elected to the Pro Bowl in 1975 . Then he went to the Oakland Raiders , where he was able to win Super Bowl XV as a bench player . After a year each with the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles , he ended his career.
college
From 1968 to 1970 Dan Pastorini attended Santa Clara University in the city of the same name, Santa Clara , California . There he played together with the future NFL referee Mike Carey in the football team, whose assistant coach was his brother Lou. In addition to American football, Pastorini also played baseball at the university .
NFL
Houston Oilers
After Pastorini was drafted in the MLB Draft in 1967 in Major League Baseball (MLB), his second draft followed in 1971, namely the one in the NFL. There he was selected third by the Houston Oilers after Jim Plunkett and Archie Manning . In the Oilers Pastorini was able to prevail in his first season on the position of the quarterback and started in 13 of 14 possible games. Nevertheless, he remained relatively unsuccessful with the Oilers over the years and could only win one game with the Oilers in the 1972 and 1973 seasons . When Bum Phillips coached the Oilers in 1975 , the team was able to record more wins than losses for the first time since the beginning of the decade and Pastorini was even elected to the Pro Bowl at the end of the season . But even under Bum Phillips, the Oilers could not reach the play-offs before they selected Earl Campbell in the first place in the 1978 draft . Pastorini led the team in 1978 with Campbell, right in his rookie season, in the AFC Championship Game. There the Oilers seemed to have no chance against the Pittsburgh Steelers and lost 34: 5, with Pastorini throwing five interceptions . Also in the following season , the Oilers with Pastorini as quarterback were second in the AFC Central and were thus qualified for the Wild Card Playoffs . There the Oilers defeated the Denver Broncos 12-5 . In the next, the Oilers had to do without Pastorini and Campbell and still beat the San Diego Chargers . In the AFC Championship Game, the Oilers met their arch rivals from Pittsburgh again. Although Pastorini, who gained 203 yards of space with his passes and only threw one interception, as well as the entire team performed well, it was not enough to win over Pittsburgh Steelers and thus not to reach the Super Bowl .
Oakland Raiders
In 1980 Bud Adams , owner of the Houston Oilers, gave Pastorini to the Oakland Raiders and received quarterback Ken Stabler in return . Pastorini then played for the Oakland Raiders and was appointed starting quarterback by coach Tom Flores . But after only five games, Pastorini injured himself and had to be replaced by Jim Plunkett . He performed so well that Pastorini couldn't get a move on and just sat on the bench. At the end of the season, the Raiders won Super Bowl XV , but Pastorini was not used.
End of career
Due to his limited time in the Raiders, Patorini moved to the Los Angeles Rams . There he came only on the 9th match day against the Detroit Lions for his first short assignment. In the next game against the New Orleans Saints , coach Ray Malavasi even let him play the full length. In the games after that he came back to short stakes, but in the long run he could not prevail against Pat Haden and Jeff Rutledge .
So Pastorini moved on and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles . He stayed there until the end of his career in 1983. During this time, he was used only three times for the Eagles and could not play a pass.
