Archie Manning , actually Elisha Archibald Manning III , (* 19th May 1949 in Drew , Mississippi ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played for the New Orleans Saints (1971-1982), the Houston Oilers (1982-1983) and the Minnesota Vikings (1983-1984) in the National Football League (NFL).
He is the father of Peyton and Eli Manning , who both played quarterbacks in the NFL.
College time
Archie Manning played college football , also known as Ole Miss , for the University of Mississippi from 1968 to 1970 . During that time, he threw passes for 4,753 yards and 56 touchdowns . He ran an additional 823 yards. Despite these good values, the team was not particularly successful. Nevertheless, Manning was elected to the All-SEC team in 1969 and 1970 (SEC = Southeastern Conference ). His jersey with the number 18 will no longer be awarded at the Ole Miss. In 1989 Manning was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
NFL
In the 1971 NFL Draft , Manning was selected as the second player behind Jim Plunkett . With the New Orleans Saints, a team acquired the rights to him, which was considered one of the weakest at the time. From this point onwards, Manning was the face and the bearer of hope of the Saints, but during his time in New Orleans (1971-1982) he could not change the team's unsuccessfulness despite occasional outstanding individual performances. To this day, many critics say that he was never able to reach his full potential due to the weakness of the team. In 1972 Manning led the NFC in pass attempts, affixed passports, and pass yards, and yet the Saints only won two games. In 1978, Archie Manning was named NFC Offensive Player of the Year by United Press International (UPI) after leading his team to an even annual record of eight wins and eight losses for the first time in history. Both in 1978 and the following year Manning was elected to the Pro Bowl . In 1982 Manning moved to the Houston Oilers, where he played for two years, just like then with the Minnesota Vikings, where he ended his career in 1985. Even in these four years his career remained uncrowned by team successes, he only won six games in total. In his 13 years in the NFL, Archie Manning made 2,011 of his 3,642 pass attempts on his wide receivers for 23,911 yards of space and 125 touchdowns. He also threw 173 interceptions during that time.
Life after the NFL
Archie Manning still lives in New Orleans to this day . He stood up for the victims of Hurricane Katrina . Although he has no official role in the organization of the New Orleans Saints, he is a constant companion of the team. Most of the time he reports about the team in the press. Archie Manning has three sons, Cooper Manning, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning . Peyton Manning played 13 years quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and 4 years for the Denver Broncos and broke several NFL records during this time. Eli Manning played for Ole Miss just like his father and was first drafted in 2004 like his brother. The San Diego Chargers exchanged him, however, directly to the New York Giants , where he prevailed as quarterback. Both Peyton ( Super Bowl XLI , 50 ) and Eli ( Super Bowl XLII , XLVI ) won the Super Bowl twice . Eli Manning was also named Super Bowl MVP on his two victories, and Peyton on his first win.
