biography

Degree and promotion to Congressman

After attending the Principia Upper Schools in St. Louis , he studied political science at Claremont Men's College , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA Political Science) in 1975 . He then began his professional career from 1975 to 1979 as director of corporate relations at Claremont McKenna College, the former Claremont Men's College, which at the time was becoming a mixed college . At the same time, he completed postgraduate studies in American government at the Claremont Graduate School with a Master of Arts (MA American Government).

He also began his political career during this time and was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1976 and 1980 to nominate the Republican US presidential candidate, and in 1978 and 1980 as a delegate to the Republican Conventions in California to nominate the candidate for governorship. He was also vice president of the family business, Dreier Development Co. in Kansas City.

After running unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1978, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 1980 for the Republicans and, after 14 subsequent re-elections since January 3, 1981, initially represented the 35th, then from 1983 to 1993 the 33rd ., from 1993 to 2003 the 28th and finally since January 3, 2003 the 26th congressional electoral district of California. Between 1999 and 2007 he was chairman of the Committee on Rules , in which he was the highest-ranking member of the Republican minority faction ( Ranking Minority Member ) and thus opposition leader until 2013 . In 2012 he decided not to run again.

Controversy over his sexual orientation

There are always rumors about Dreier, who was probably a friend of Dorothy Bush , the daughter and sister of former US President George Bush and George W. Bush for a year , about his sexual orientation and his homosexuality . However, he himself does not make any statements about this and also rejected the question of whether he was heterosexual in a radio interview as irrelevant.

In 2004 he was awarded the Roy Cohn Prize by Mike Rogers, an activist with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force , for fighting gay and lesbian rights for 24 years , even though he was actually in a gay partnership with his own Chief of Staff Brad Smith would live.

In fact, Dreier supported the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 and the Marriage Protection Act in 2004 . He also voted against gays and lesbians being allowed to adopt children and against hate crimes against gays and lesbians being criminalized ( Hate Crimes Prevention Act ). He also spoke against the abolition of the discrimination of people living with HIV in the allocation of flats ( Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program ), compared the increase in federal funding for expensive HIV drugs ( ADAP Program ) and against a ban on discrimination for applications from gays and lesbians ( Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) ).
