Theodore A. Bell

Theodore Arlington Bell (born July 25, 1872 in Vallejo , California , †  September 4, 1922 in San Rafael , California) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1905 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1876, Theodore Bell came to St. Helena , Napa County with his parents , where he later attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1893, he began to work in Napa in this profession. Between 1895 and 1903 he was a district attorney in Napa County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1902 , Bell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of California , where he succeeded Samuel D. Woods on March 4, 1903 . Since he was not confirmed in 1904, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1905 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Bell practiced as a lawyer in San Francisco . He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1908 and 1912. In 1906, 1910 and 1918 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of California . In the first two failed attempts, he ran as a candidate for the Democratic Party, from which he then turned away. In 1918 he applied as an independent, where he was clearly defeated by the Republican incumbent William Stephens with 56.3 against 36.5 percent of the vote. In 1921 Theodore Bell became a member of the Republican Party . He died in a car accident near San Rafael on September 4, 1922.
