Walter Stephan Baring Jr. (born September 9, 1911 in Goldfield , Nevada , †  July 13, 1975 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 and from 1957 to 1973 he represented the first constituency of the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Walter Baring attended Reno High School until 1929 and then studied at the University of Nevada at Reno until 1934 . In doing so, he was licensed as a university lecturer. Baring then embarked on a political career. He became a member of the Democratic Party and in 1936 headed their county association in Washoe County . He was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1936 and 1942 . During World War II , Baring served in the US Navy from September 1942 to May 1945 . He then worked in the furniture trade in Reno between 1945 and 1948 . Between 1947 and 1948 he was a member of Reno City Council.

Congressman

In 1948 Baring was elected to the US House of Representatives. There he replaced Charles H. Russell on January 3, 1949 . After a re-election in 1950, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 1953. In 1952 and 1954, he ran unsuccessfully to remain or return to the House of Representatives. During these years he worked in the insurance industry. In 1956 he managed to return to Congress. Between January 3, 1957 and January 3, 1973, he was able to complete eight further legislative periods as a member of parliament. Baring was also a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions between 1952 and 1968.

After he was no longer nominated by his party in 1972, he retired to Reno. He died there on July 13, 1975.
