Rochelle "Shelley" Berkley (born January 20, 1951 in New York City ) is an American politician . From 1999 to 2013 she represented the first constituency of the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives . In the 2012 election to the US Senate , she ran against Republican incumbent Dean Heller and was defeated.

Early years

As a teenager, Rochelle Levine, later Rochelle Berkley, moved with her family to Nevada. There she attended Valley High School in Las Vegas and then until 1972 the University of Nevada there , where she studied political science. She then studied law at the University of San Diego in California until 1976 . After her admission as a lawyer, she worked in this profession. Among other things, she represented several casinos in Las Vegas.

Political career

Berkley became a member of the Democratic Party . She was a member of the Nevada Assembly from 1983 to 1986 . From 1990 to 1998 she was a member of the board of directors of Nevada universities ( Nevada University and Community College System Board of Regents ). In the 1998 congressional elections, she was elected to the US House of Representatives, where on January 3, 1999, she replaced Republican John Ensign , who was running for Senator . After she was confirmed in her office in the following years, she continues her mandate to this day; Most recently she won in November 2010 with a 62 percent share of the vote against Republican Kenneth Wegner, whom she had defeated two years earlier .

In October 2002, she was one of 81 Democratic Congressmen who voted for the Iraq war . In the Middle East conflict she supports the politics of the State of Israel . Berkley served on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Ways and Means .

In the 2012 election in the United States , she no longer ran for her congressional district, but ran for the office of Senator. In the election to the US Senate , she stood against the Republican incumbent Dean Heller and was narrowly defeated. Her congressional mandate ended on January 3, 2013.

Private

Shelley Berkley is married to Larry Lehrner, with whom she has two children of their own and two stepchildren.
