Henry Gaither Worthington (born February 9, 1828 in Cumberland , Maryland , † July 29, 1909 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1864 and 1865 he represented the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives . He was also the American envoy to Uruguay and Argentina .

Early years and political advancement

After finishing elementary school, Henry Worthington studied law. After his admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Tuolumne County , California . After traveling through Latin America, he settled in San Francisco . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party , as whose candidate he was elected to the California State Assembly in 1861 . In 1862 he moved to Austin , Nevada Territory .

Congressman and diplomat

After Nevada joined the United States as a state, Henry Worthington was elected the new state's first MP in the US House of Representatives. Until 1980 there was only one constituency in this state . Worthington served between October 31, 1864 and March 3, 1865. In 1865 he was appointed head of the customs authorities at the port of Charleston ( South Carolina named). He was also one of the pallbearers at Abraham Lincoln's funeral . Worthington served as envoy to Uruguay and Argentina in 1868 and 1869; in this capacity he succeeded Alexander Asboth . A candidacy for the US Senate failed because of only two votes. Henry Worthington died in Washington on July 29, 1909.
