Jon Porter

Jonathan Christopher "Jon" Porter (born May 16, 1955 in Fort Dodge , Iowa ) is an American politician . Between 2003 and 2009 he represented the third constituency of the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Jonathan Porter first attended Humboldt High School and then Briar Cliff College in Sioux City , Iowa. Then he worked as a businessman. Since 1983 he was also a representative of an agricultural insurance company. Porter became a member of the Republican Party . After moving to Boulder City , Nevada, he was a councilor there between 1983 and 1993. From 1987 to 1991 he was also mayor of this municipality. Between 1994 and 2002 he was a member of the Nevada Senate .

Porter in the US Congress

In 2000, Jonathan Porter ran for the US House of Representatives in Nevada’s first constituency. But he was defeated by Shelley Berkley , the Democratic Party candidate . In the 2002 elections, he successfully ran for Congress in the newly created third district . After he was confirmed in his office in 2004 and 2006, he was able to exercise his mandate between January 3, 2003 and January 3, 2009. In the 2008 elections he was defeated by the Democrat Dina Titus . In Congress, Porter served on the Budget Committee and the Committee on Ways and Means . He supported the Iraq war and advocated the privatization of social security. He was also against raising the minimum wage in the public sector.
